6 Things to Know About Vasectomies in Ottawa

A vasectomy is a permanent form of birth control. You and your partner should discuss whether it’s the right choice for you. Here are a few important things that you should know:

  1. A vasectomy doesn’t affect your sex drive or hormones.
  2. You should still use a form of birth control until the doctor confirms that there are no more spermatozoids present in your ejaculate, which takes a few weeks.
  3. A vasectomy can be reversed, but vasectomy reversal has a lower success rate.
  4. The procedure is done with a local anesthetic.  If you are very anxious, we can also prescribe you an anxiolytic.
  5. You should be able to resume normal activities, such as exercise and sex, within seven days.
  6. A vasectomy won’t protect you against sexually transmitted infections.

Frequently Asked Questions About Vasectomy in Ottawa

Yes, in most cases, a vasectomy is covered by Ontario’s Health Insurance Plan (OHIP), meaning that residents in Ontario typically pay nothing for the procedure itself. However, depending on your specific situation, there may be associated costs for some items or other added services. It’s best to confirm these details with our clinic staff when booking your vasectomy.

We strive to schedule appointments quickly. Most patients can expect to have their procedure within a few weeks of booking, depending on demand.

Before the procedure, follow any specific instructions provided by your doctor. Plan to take it easy after the surgery and arrange for someone to drive your home.

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, so you won’t feel any significant pain during the surgery. Afterward, mild discomfort and bruising is normal but can be managed with over-the-counter pain medication and ice packs.

A vasectomy is over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy. However, it’s important to use alternative contraception until your doctor confirms that no sperm are present in your semen.
